Jean Gauvreau - Biography/Biographie

Jean Gauvreau was born and raised in Ottawa, Ontario. He continues to call the Outouais region Gatineau (Aylmer) his home, and his paintings reflect the culture, and seasonal moods of the area.

Early training includes high school art & technical drawing courses, and a diploma in Graphic Arts at Algonquin College. Jean began exhibiting his paintings both on the West Coast and Ottawa in the 1970's relying on positions as a graphic artist and Window Dresser to support himself. Upon returning to Ottawa he began to teach oil paintings with the Nepean Visual Arts Centre and continues to teach at www.brushstrokesartgallery.ca in Carleton Place, Ont.

He has both managed and exhibited his paintings at Karinta Gallery & Artmode Gallery, Sparks St. Ottawa, Ont. He has had numerous exhibitions throughout the Outaouais region and recently was selected by www.charitycards.ca to feature his painting "Maple Farm" in their collection of Greeting Cards with part of the proceeds going towards the "Children's Wish Foundation of Canada". He continues to receive commissions for his work reflecting the Gatineau region where he resides.

Works by Jean Gauvreau are in the collection of Lt. Govenor General of Nova Scotia, "The Honorable Alan R. Abraham", and numerous private collections in Canada, U.S.A., China and Europe.

Artist Statement

Gowing up in Ottawa and the Gatineau region, my early influences were the visual impact of the surrounding landscapes & the surprising variation of colours and textures of the seasons. Coupled with the rich history of both french & english cultures and the settlement of the Outaouais region. I have attempted to capture in my paintings a personal interpretation of both throughout the years. Working primarely in Oils, I continue to explore the subtlety of shapes and colours, and the vitality of the history. I aspire to present through my painting these visual "snap shots" as I have experienced them.

Jean Gauvreau est né et a grandi à Ottawa, en Ontario. Il continue d'appeler la maison Outouais région, et ses peintures reflètent la culture et de l'humeur saisonniers de la région.
Au début de formation comprend des arts de l'école et des cours de dessin technique, et un diplôme en arts graphiques au Collège Algonquin. Jean commence à exposer ses tableaux à la fois sur la côte Ouest et à Ottawa dans les années 1970 en s'appuyant sur les positions en tant que graphiste et designer pour se soutenir. Ayant grandi à Ottawa et la région de Gatineau, mes premières influences ont été l'impact visuel des paysages environnants et la variation étonnante de couleurs et de textures des saisons. Couplé à la riche histoire des cultures à la fois français et anglais et le peuplement de la région de l'Outaouais, j'ai tenté de capturer dans mes peintures une interprétation personnelle de chacun, au fil des ans. Travaillant principalement dans l'huile, je continue d'explorer la subtilité des couleurs et la vitalité de l'histoire. J'aspire à présent à travers mes peintures de ces visuels "clichés" comme je l'ai fait l'expérience.
